Manganese

What is manganese?
Manganese is a trace mineral that is found in very small amounts in the body.  It’s concentrated mostly in the bones, liver, kidney and pancreas and has many processes in the body.  As it is a trace mineral we need to make sure we get a balanced amount, not too little or too much.

What does it do in the body?
Manganese contributes to normal energy yielding metabolism, helping to make sure we get the energy we need from our diet
Manganese contributes to the maintenance of normal bones and is often found in bone complex supplements
Manganese contributes to the normal formation of connective tissue and is often taken alongside glucosamine and chondroitin
Manganese contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress.  It can help protect our body from free radical damage.

How can I take manganese?
Manganese is found in different forms such as manganese salts and manganese chelates.
It can be taken as tablets or capsules, and is found in multivitamin and mineral supplements, as well as trace mineral complexes.  Manganese can have side effects when taken at high doses, and can interact with some medication and it is important to work with a qualified nutritionist to discuss dosages and uses.
