What are Betaine and Pepsin?

The acid in our stomach is really important for breaking down food and killing off pathogens in food.Pepsin is an enzyme that is required for the breakdown of protein, and Betaine hydrochloride is needed to create an acidic enzyme within the stomach.

Why do I need Betaine and Pepsin?
Having the correct acidity in the stomach is vital for proper digestion. Proper digestion is necessary for proper absorption of nutrients and to keep the correct acidity in the stomach to guard against pathogens. Properly absorbing nutrients is necessary for optimal health of both the digestive tract and the whole body.  An acid and Pepsin deficiency may cause you to suffer from indigestion, and to pass undigested food in your faecal matter. This may be visual to the eye or under a microscope.
Our stressful modern lives, old age and some medical conditions and medications can leave our bodies not producing enough acid in our stomach and many people require support.

How do I take Betaine and Pepsin?
Betaine and pepsin supplementation needs to be carefully dosed. Start with one tablet at the start or during a meal. If there is no warm sensation in your stomach area on your next meal, increase it to 2. Again if there is no warm sensation increase it to 3. If you do however experience a warm sensation, then drink 1 teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda in water to neutralise the acid. For your next meal you will know that one tablet less than your last is your optimal dose. If you get the warm sensation after one tablet, then you do not need Betaine hydrochloride and Pepsin.

Betaine Hydrochloride and Pepsin are reabsorbed once they have done their job. Therefore, they may only need to be taken for a period of time such as 3 or 6 months.
