Gum disease is very common.  Three out of four adults over the age of 35 experience tender, swollen or bleeding gums at some point in their lives.  Symptoms of gum disease could include bleeding gums after teeth cleaning, red or swollen gums, toothache, chronic bad breath or a bad taste in the mouth or loose or missing teeth.

There are two main types of gum disease: gingivitis and periodontitis.  Gingivitis (tender, inflamed gums) occurs when bacteria in the mouth form plaque which coats the teeth and gums.  If left untreated, this plaque may turn into tartar which erodes gum tissue.  This may lead to periodontitis.

Various supplements used together can help heal sore and bleeding gums.  Studies carried out on Coenzyme Q 10 show that it reduces the depth of pockets formed around the teeth, this stabilises the teeth and aids in shortening the recovery period after dental surgery.

Vitamin C with flavonoids may strengthen connective tissue in the gums and decrease inflammation.  It promotes the healing especially of bleeding gums and the bioflavonoids retard the growth of plaque.  It is also thought to help by accelerating bone regeneration.

Beneficial bacteria (probiotics) are important for maintaining the tissues of the mouth in good condition.  Tea tree oil has proven antibiotic properties and is often included in good toothpastes.

It is important to see your dentist regularly and maintain good dental hygiene.
