If it is recurrent and persistent, then it may be linked to Candida (please see the other health section on this for treatment and products). The condition of the vagina is delicate and therefore women can be very prone to thrush whereas it is much less common in men.
The Candida section focuses on various lifestyle and treatment options, but this page just covers vaginal based products. These include special oral probiotics specific to alleviating the symptoms of thrush and creams to soothe the vaginal area. These may be helpful as a natural alternative to pharmacy or prescription creams. If symptoms do not improve, please always see your doctor. Thrush can be common in pregnancy or a sign of pregnancy, so please check with your doctor if you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant. Some women can experience thrush after a course of antibiotics. Therefore we recommend taking a probiotic once the course has finished.
Bacterial Vaginosis (BV)
It is an overgrowth of bacteria in the vagina. This is not a sexually transmitted disease and is similar to thrush but is characterized by a distinct strong smelling discharge which is thick in consistency (sometimes a yellow colour). It is always advisable to have a doctor or nurse diagnose this in case it is not BV. There is now a natural treatment option available called ‘Balance Activ’.
General Advice
Because the vagina has a delicate flora that can be easily upset, we advise wearing cotton underwear to allow the area to breathe. Also if you are a sufferer of thrush, avoid wearing tights (stockings may be more suitable). Wash your hair in the shower, not the bath and avoid adding soaps to bath water – as these chemicals may upset the condition of the vagina. After sexual intercourse, wash the vagina with warm water (some women experience more thrush during a regular sex life). If you have thrush, it is also ideal to treat your partner too.
Coconut butter can be used a gentle anti fungal treatment (due to its natural occurring lauric and caprylic acid content) and may be used as natural sexual lubricant (some women are sensitive to normal lubricants or want to avoid synthetic ingredients). Do not use with condoms. V-Gel by Higher Nature is another lubricant alternative and can be used with condoms.
