Immune Support

Trying to make sure your child's diet is as healthy as possible is the first step to supporting their immune system. Lots of fresh vegetables and fruit in different colours provide vitamin C and a broad range of supportive 'phytonutrients'. Protein foods are important also – eggs, fish, meat (all organic if possible), nuts, seeds, beans and lentils are all great sources of protein and also of zinc, which is an essential nutrient for immune health. Fish and eggs also supply some vitamin D – although the best source is always sunlight! Wholegrains are also a good source of nutrients. Try to minimise artificial additives (found in many processed foods), 'white' or refined bread and pasta, and sugary foods in their diet – sugar actually weakens the immune system.
In terms of supplements, is a good kids' multivitamin and mineral is always a good place to start, as deficiencies in many nutrients can have an impact on immunity. Check out the Children's Multivitamins page for more details.
The following nutrients or herbs – some of which are already mentioned above – may be particularly supportive of good immune health and can all be found in supplements suitable for kids:
- Vitamin C
- Vitamin D
- Zinc
- Beta glucans from yeast. Beta glucans are thought to act as “immuno-modulators”, helping to keep our immune system active. See Immiflex Kids for more information.

- Echinacea
- Probiotic supplements (good bacteria, e.g. lactobacillus acidophilus). By colonising the digestive tract with the right bacteria, probiotics can help the immune system in several ways, including by warding off the undesirable bacteria and other microbes.
