Ayurvedic Health
One of the oldest systems of traditional medicine is Ayurveda which dates back five to ten thousand years. It is the oldest healing system known and is the most complete. Its logical, common-sense approach to health and living is combined with philosophy, psychology and spiritual guidance.
Whereas Western Medicine has traditionally tended to take the view that all ...Read more people are more or less the same, and has attempted to treat the condition rather than the patient suffering from it, Ayurveda makes its special contribution by addressing the uniqueness of each patient and by helping the body to protect and heal itself.
Ayurvedic medicines are officially classified as ‘food supplements’ and few have a product licence. Yet none have adverse side-effects.
Ayurvedic medicine is based on the concept of the three doshas. The doshas are bodily energies (sometimes called bio-energies) which influence all living matter and mental energies too. It is understood that any imbalance will lead to a disorder in the body or the mind. The 3 dosha types are known as vata, pitta and kapha. Someone with dominant vata energy tends to be thin, restless and creative; the pitta type mostly conforms to a happy medium; kapha people tend to be heavy, slow and lethargic.
Ayurveda teaches that everything in the world is made up of a combination of the three doshas, and that the doshas themselves combine two of the five elements: vata is Ether and Air; pitta is Fire and Water; kapha is Water and Earth.
