Stress is a part of life and we need some demands to keep us motivated and focused. But what happens when stress is relentless and we ...Read more don’t prioritise time to recover?

21st Century Pressures:
Modern day stress is very different to that our ancestors would have experienced. The one stress reaction that we have, the fight-or-flight response was designed to help us deal with the true physical dangers of living in the wild. This means we are well-equipped with a sudden rush of adrenaline to create the raised heartbeat, sensory awareness and increased muscle response we would need to stand and fight that attacking tiger or run swiftly in the other direction. Modern life has come at us in a relatively short time (it’s only 10,000 odd years since we were living as Stone Age hunter-gatherers), really not enough time for evolutionary adaptation, so we are still reacting in this same way. Great if we need to jump out of the way of a falling piano but more likely, our stresses are the relentless grind of deadlines, financial issues and more psycho-social (emotional issues) that add up bit-by-bit. We can recover quickly from a short, sharp physical shock but with constant worry we don’t play out the stress in the physical way that the body is expecting. So we are left with little recovery time and pent up stress hormones that wear down our systems whilst we can stay in ‘constant alert’.

Chronic Stress
These continual pressures and tendencies to want to ‘do’ all the time leave us with little restoration and even feeling disconnected with the signals our bodies are sending us. Chronic stress can show up in many symptoms, from those associated with heightened nervous system states like anxiety, insomnia, headaches to digestive issues like IBS and on the increase, inflammatory and immune conditions like eczema, asthma, acne and reduced resistance to infection.

Stress and Weight Management
On the weight front, stress hormones like cortisol also stimulate appetite – signalling that we need to take on more fuel for that physical response - and during periods of prolonged stress, an over-production of it turns those extra calories into fat.  Plus, because abdominal cells have more receptors for cortisol than any other part of the body, most of that fat gets stored around the tummy.  People who produce excess cortisol tend to have bulky waistlines and apple-shaped bodies rather than pear-shaped ones.  Chronically elevated cortisol can lead to the loss of muscle tone and inhibit your thyroid function, which can slow the metabolism and make it more difficult to lose weight, even when you are following a healthy diet.

More info and references are found in The De-Stress Diet  by Charlotte Watts and Anna Magee, which also has a quiz that you can do to identify the signs that your body’s ability to cope is being worn down. There is also a Stress Suit chapter with quizzes to identify what how your body is manifesting stress symptoms and how best to prioritise your De-Stress measures.

De-Stress Basic Supplement Programmes with Charlotte Watts – sub-category

Charlotte Watts, Nutritional Therapist and author of The De-Stress Diet  with Anna Magee, has put together these supplement combinations to help our bodies and minds cope with stress in the 21st century. The seven categories follow the Stress Suits described in the book (where you can do a quiz) but there are simple guidelines to help you choose what is most relevant to you here too.

Each programme recommends the following basic supplements to support the demands and needs in modern life, more information and full references are available in The De-Stress Diet :

•    Multivitamin and Mineral Supplement – including B vitamins, chromium and zinc; nutrients quickly used up in the stress response to create energy in cells and to metabolise sugars released into the bloodstream for that very energy. Studies have shown that a multi may help support weight-loss efforts alongside dietary and lifestyle changes.
•    Vitamin C -  lower levels in modern food and a higher need if under stress or exposed to pollution may affect the immune supporting action of this key antioxidant, that may also help support liver detoxification.
•    Omega 3 Oils - It has been observed that modern diets tend to be higher in omega 6 oils and lower in omega 3 oils, found directly in oily fish, krill and algae. We recommend algae rather than plant sources for vegetarians as DHA/EPA needs to be converted from alpha-linoleic acid, a process that can become hindered by stress.
•    Probiotics – these are the beneficial bacteria, which occupy the gut and we are starting to fully understand how they may affect immunity, digestion and even mood. They have shown to be depleted by stress.
•    Optional extra: liver support – to help maintain detoxification processes that may be affected by stress.
•    Optional extra: adrenal support – to help maintain adrenal function and energy production that may be affected by stress.
