What is 5-HTP?
5-HTP is short for 5-hydroxytrytophan. Tryptophan is converted into serotonin, and then into melatonin in the body. 5HTP is the step between tryptophan and serotonin. It is an amino acid commercially obtained from Griffonia simplicifolia seeds.

Serotonin is also known as the ‘happy hormone’. Some anti-depressants from the doctor are serotonin re-up take inhibitors. Basically they increase the amount of serotonin in the body.

Serotonin is then converted into melatonin. Melatonin is not legally allowed to be sold in the UK, however doctors can prescribe it for insomnia and controlling your body’s natural clock.

Why do I need 5-HTP?
People who suffer from sleeping disorders and jet lag may need some help with resetting their body clock, or to help ease them into sleep. 5HTP would be a good thing to take half an hour before seeping, so the 5HTP has time to convert into serotonin and then into melatonin.

How do I Take 5-HTP?
5-HTP is available in a capsule. If you want to use 5-HTP as a therapeutic agent, it is best to take it on an empty stomach which a carbohydrate snack such as a piece of fruit. Proteins which are broken down into amino acids compete for absorption with each other, so taking it away from protein allows your body to utilise more 5-HTP.
